Can I just say…. MATERNITY CLOTHES. Hall-e-lu-jah. My body is changing in some shocking ways for this first-time pregnant lady. The other day I was getting ready in the bathroom and could not get over how much just in the past week or two my body has changed! My belly is less “bumpy” and moreso just out, which means essentially none of my “pre-pregnancy” shirts fit anymore. If they still wrap around my body, they are juuuust short enough that it’s high time they get boxed away for next winter.

So needless to say, I’m grateful for maternity clothing that makes me feel cute even when I’m starting to feel big. And I’m grateful I live in this current day and age of trendy maternity clothes, not the day and age when my mom was pregnant… she describes her maternity clothes as “tents.” Ha! Sooo flattering and confidence-boosting. 😉

One of my favorite maternity clothing stores so far is PinkBlush Maternity – they have the cutest little maternity boutique that offers a wide variety of styles for every season! I picked this happy peach maternity top photographed above because I needed something to brighten my maternity closet – I’m a sucker for neutrals, so everything I have is so dark! This is one of my favorite tops to pull out on a yucky day when I need some brightness around me.

Where do you love to shop for maternity clothes?

Thanks to PinkBlush Maternity for providing the shirt photographed above AND for the opportunity to give YOU a little mid-winter shopping spree! There’s a $75 giftcard up for grabs (for either their maternity line OR their womens line, which I also love!!) You can enter here:

My first attempt at Fashion Blogging this year & new glasses!

Firmoo Glasses Review

IMG_0140

Holy moly I forgot how hard it was to take pictures outside in the winter. It took all of about 10 minutes for my toes and ears to feel like they’d fall off any second. Fashion bloggers, more power to you ladies. How do you do it?!

I even had a cute outfit on underneath my coat, but I couldn’t take it off, dang it! Just removing my gloves for these photos made me call into question my sanity. Since I took nearly the entire year off of blogging last year, I realized just how much I need some serious TLC with my camera. I spent the first 10 minutes outside just trying to get a shot that wasn’t incredibly over or under exposed and then 10 more minutes of shooting, fervently praying there would be at least one photo in focus. Darn self timer! Needless to say, you will find me playing with my camera this weekend, trying to earn back my blogger status 🙂

But, on to the point! These glasses! I reviewed a pair of Firmoo glasses about a year ago (but more wisely chose the FALL instead of WINTER to do this…) and was super excited to get the chance to work with them again. To be honest, I’m an extremely cheap person, so I’ve had the same pair of (mostly unworn) glasses since probably high school, which means they are way out of style and most likely an incorrect prescription. I hate spending money on anything that can easily be broken (read: sat on), so I never buy expensive sunglasses or regular glasses. That’s where Firmoo comes in – they have a wide selection of frames and are inexpensively priced! So when you lose your glasses (or sit on them), it’s not that big of a deal to easily replace them. They ship quickly, as well, and I’m all about shipping anything to my door that I could buy in the store, especially when it’s cold outside. 🙂

If you’re in the market for a new pair of glasses, or just want another pair to switch up your daily style, check out Firmoo! I have hardly taken these guys off my face since they arrived two days ago.

Do you wear glasses? Where are your favorite places to shop?

*I was provided a free pair of glasses in exchange for my honest review. All opinions are my own. This post contains affiliate links – these links add no additional cost to you, but help support 34 Magnolia Street. Thank you!

On Photoshopping Myself

Last night I stumbled upon this Instagram account, where the user points out how bloggers used photoshop to make themselves look skinnier in blog posts or social media posts. I even learned there’s something called a Skinny App that does that for you? As I scrolled through the posts, my heart hurt. A lot.

It makes me sick that we feel the need to photoshop ourselves before we post pictures online. And I’m not talking about smoothing out wrinkles in your shirt or erasing that stray hair across your face – I’m talking about erasing parts of ourselves: making your legs, arms, or waist look thinner, etc.

In thinking about how much time I pour into this space, I want it to mean something. I want my online life to say something to the women and girls who read it. You are beautiful, you are loved, and you are enough in your skin the way you are right now. I won’t ever photoshop my body because, no matter how much I can critique it, that’s the way it is. And photoshopping it here does not change it in real life. Photoshopping it here does not tell you or me to love the body God gave us. Photoshopping it tells us both we aren’t enough the way you are. Photoshopping my body tells us both we need to live up to a reality that isn’t achievable.

I hope you can come to this blog and see an everyday girl who likes to wear cute things. A girl who believes there’s more to life than pretty accessories and a beautiful house. A girl who works everyday to be comfortable in her own skin and to encourage you to be the same. But in all of those things, a girl who believes God sent his Son for you and for me to die for our sins, so that we can know him and be welcomed into eternal life with him. Because of Christ’s sacrifice, we are now in a right relationship with God and our lives are changed because of that.

Friend, that’s what this season is about. As we await the birth of Christ, we remember his death. We remember the babe who was born in a manger, the man who lived his life here on the very earth we live now without an inkling of sin, and the man who sacrificed his life with us in his mind. We celebrate the man who is God in the flesh, who gives us an eternal worth that looking skinnier online can’t even touch.

Girl, you are loved. The shape of your body won’t change that. You are loved right now, as you are, in your skin.

But God, being rich in mercy, because of the great love with which he loved us, even when we were dead in our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ – by grace you have been saved – and raised us up with him in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus, so that in the coming ages he might show the immeasurable riches of his grace in kindness toward us in Christ Jesus. For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast.

For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them. – Ephesians 2: 4-10

Hold onto that truth today.

The Creative Closet: All Snowed In

As you can see, the snow surrounding me is nowhere close to what “snowed in” would look like up here. BUT, if I was snowed in, this is what I’d be wearing, complete with snow boots and a shovel because we’d for sure be outside shoveling.

We don’t really get “snowed in” around here because they are so great at getting the roads cleaned up quickly! It isn’t surprising to get a foot of snow dumped on us in one afternoon. But, we got our first big snow the day before Thanksgiving, and Jacob and I chose to be “snowed in” rather than braving our 15 hour drive through a snowstorm. So you can bet we were shoveling and wearing comfy clothes all evening!

Well, I am super excited to get to co-host The Creative Closet this week with Maegen and Jana! I was thinking last week just how much this link up has helped me to see my closet with new eyes. Because I’ve tried to keep up with the weekly prompts, I’ve put together a lot of outfits I never would have bothered to try without that inspiration, and now they are part of my outfit rotation!

For instance, last week’s lady in red – that one took a lot of nerve for me and I got a great response on the blog and in real life as I wore it around! Also, my first ever flannel outfit, dressed up with a skirt and boots! The shirt-over-a-dress look I’d always wanted to try, but never had the nerve. And my first ever fashion post and TCC link up that had my stomach in knots the day it went live!

You can shop an outfit similar to mine here:

Northface Snow Boots (similar)  |  YogaOutlet Pants (similar)

All that to say, I’d really encourage you to try it. Even if you’re too nervous to post it on your blog (or you don’t have a blog!), keep up with the prompts and follow through with them! You’ll use your clothes in new ways and you won’t want to turn back! 😉 Even if you don’t have a blog, you can post your look on Instagram with #TheCreativeCloset for us to see!

Here are the rest of the prompts for December:

And we ask that you please either link back to the hosts or share this pretty button in your post or on your sidebar!

Lady in Red

So, 3 things about this outfit:

1.  As you can tell, I like wearing dresses. But what I really like about wearing dresses is getting to wear these sweater tights. I have basically abandoned all other tights/hose/leggings in my wardrobe for these babies. They get to see the light of day probably twice a week.

2. As you’ve seen here and here, I have rocked the dress with a cardigan look a lot already this winter, so I tried to switch it up with throwing something under my dress this time. It’s my button down arrow shirt from this outfit a couple weeks ago. What do you think – yay or nay? I’m kind of on the fence still. I felt pretty preppy while wearing this, though, so that was fun. 😉

3. It was also less than 30 degrees while I was taking these photos… so there were a few “put my coat back on” breaks, like the photo below… and this entire ordeal took me less than ten minutes. The wind was killer!

4 (this is a bonus). This red dress is literally the ONLY red piece of clothing I own. I didn’t realize red just isn’t one of my colors. Do you have colors like that – the ones you never see in your closet? What are they?

Happy Tuesday! Tell me your thoughts about my ramblings! 😉

P.S. I’m linking up with Maegen and Jana, so be sure to go check out their “lady in red” looks!

So what’s the deal with Pure Barre?!

Pants: YogaOutlet.com

You guys. I’ve found my new favorite form of exercise. If you’ve been around here for very long, you know I like to switch it up. I still call myself a runner, even though I haven’t run for probably two months because I have a love/hate relationship with running. I do it a lot because I love it, but then I get burnt out and need to take a break.

I’m in one of those break periods of the year, so I needed to find a different way to exercise to keep me busy. I’ve done yoga, which I loved, but it’s so expensive to do without a deal around here! So I got a Groupon to try Pure Barre a few weeks ago.

And now I’m hooked.

For those of y’all who’ve never tried a Barre class, it’s like a mixture of ballet, aerobics, yoga and strength training, all wrapped up into 1 hour of listening to fun, upbeat music and putting your body to work! The studio looks like a ballet studio, with mirrors everywhere and the ballet barre around the room.

I’ve been going to three classes a week consistently with some friends, and I can already see changes in my body… it’s pretty exciting. I feel a lot stronger, and when I was getting ready the other day I noticed I actually have arm muscles! As something who has always had stronger legs than arms… I am PUMPED!

On a side note, I got my first pair of legitimate yoga pants (aka not running pants) from YogaOutlet.com last month! And they have a great holiday shop guide for your Christmas shopping pleasure 🙂

How do you like to exercise through the winter?
